Sex attractants in primates.

چکیده

The role of olfactory sexual attractants in the sex behavior of primates is discussed. These olfactory cues can prompt mounting, masturbation, and ejaculation, increase grooming behavior, and reduce aggressive behavior. In rhesus monkeys, the addition of phenylpropanoic and parahydroxyphenylpropanoic acids to a synthetic acid mixture has been shown to enhance the effectiveness of the synthetic pheromone. However, the response produced was often varied, which demonstrates the complexity of defining an olfactory sexual response in higher primates. A possible mechanism by which pheromones elicit sexual behavior is discussed.

Sternal Gland Scent-Marking Signals Sex, Age, Rank, and Group Identity in Captive Mandrills.

Mandrills are one of the few Old World primates to show scent-marking. We combined ethological and chemical approaches to improve our understanding of this behavior in 3 zoo-managed groups. We observed the olfactory behavior performed by adults and adolescents (N = 39) for 775h. We investigated the volatile components of sternal scent-marks using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and compare...

Measuring salivary analytes from free-ranging monkeys.

Studies of large free-ranging mammals have been revolutionized by non-invasive methods for assessing physiology, which usually involve the measurement of fecal or urinary biomarkers. However, such techniques are limited by numerous factors. To expand the range of physiological variables measurable non-invasively from free-ranging primates, we developed techniques for sampling monkey saliva by o...

First Record of the Scarab Beetle, Phyllophaga lissopyge from South America, with Descriptions of Adult Seasonal Activity and Male Response to Sex Attractants

Phyllophaga lissopyge (Bates) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) is reported for the first time from South America. Male sex pheromone response is described for P. lissopyge and two other co-occurring Phyllophaga species. Adults of P. lissopyge and P. menetriesi (Blanchard) flew to traps baited with methyl 2-(methylthio) benzoate whereas adults of P. obsoleta (Blanchard) flew irregularly...
